These valves manage the pressure in an engine-driven air compressor by combining the function of a pilot valve and an unloader valve in one device. A pilot valve maintains a set pressure range while the engine continues to run in between the cycles of the pump. An unloader valve releases, or bleeds off, air to reduce pressure that builds up in the pump. This happens when compressed air in the pump is not able to be stored in the tank or system when the maximum pressure is reached. Unloader valves protect the pump from the strain of working against pressure during startup, which puts stress on the pump and may reduce its operating life.
