This is a plastic insert that locates in the jigsaw base plate, reducing the gap around the blade and the splinter area. Another technique is to score a guide line on the wood. This creates a pre-cut line that must then be followed accurately. The last technique is to place adhesive tape over the proposed cut line. This holds the material in place whilst the cut is being made.
