- Basic structure
A typical oil seal is made up of synthetic rubber. The lip that comes into contact with and slides on the rotating shaft has a seal lip and a dust lip, and by pressing the tip of the lip against the shaft surface, the tip of the lip seals in the lubricant, and the dust lip prevents foreign matter from entering from the outside. - Sealing theory
A very thin oil film forms between the lip of a rotating oil seal and the shaft when the shaft rotates. This is called a fluid lubrication state, and the oil film plays a role in suppressing wear on the lip. In addition, the lip has the effect of sucking oil from the atmosphere side to the oil side to prevent it from leaking outside, and this is called pump action. Through these actions, rotating oil seals maintain an exquisite balance of sealing and lubrication.
