The viscosity of paints and other substances in a 500ml sample can is precisely measured by the resistance of a precisely controlled rotor, determining the time it takes for 100 rotations. The test machine calculates the KU value by measuring the time it takes for the rotor to complete 100 rotations in approximately 30 seconds, using a weight that is set to that point.
