The FTDI Chip FT232R is a USB-to-serial UART interface device with an optional clock generator output. Asynchronous and synchronous bit-bang interface modes are also available. The EEPROM, clock circuitry, and USB resistors effectively form a "3-in-1" chip for various applications. An internally generated clock (6 MHz, 12 MHz, 24 MHz, or 48 MHz) can be used to drive a microcontroller or external logic. A unique FTDIChip-ID is burned into the device during manufacturing and can be read over USB, forming the basis for a security dongle. This can be used to protect customer application software from copying. Free drivers for the most common operating systems are available from the FTDI website .
