Minimum Temperature: -50°C. Maximum Temperature: 500°C. RS Pro Thin-Film Pt100 and Pt1000 Platinum Resistance Temperature Detectors. These high-quality, reliable Pt100 and Pt1000 PRTs (Platinum Resistance Thermometers) or RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors) from RS Pro offer a thin-film construction for accurate and reliable temperature measurement. These temperature sensors respond quickly to temperature changes and are resistant to both vibration and shock. These PRTs have a flat design, making them ideal for measuring surface temperatures. What are Pt100 and Pt1000 RTDs? An RTD is a type of temperature sensor based on the correlation between metal and temperature. As a metal heats up, it resists electrical current more. This resistance can be measured and converted into a temperature reading. "Pt" refers to platinum (platinum wire or thin film). "100" indicates that the temperature sensor has a resistance of 100 Ω at 0°C, and "1000" indicates that the temperature sensor has a resistance of 1000 Ω at 0°C. Platinum is the most reliable metal because its resistance changes linearly over a wide temperature range. What is a Thin-Film RTD? Thin-film platinum RTDs consist of a thin layer of platinum (typically 1 micron thick) on a ceramic substrate. This is then covered with a layer of epoxy or glass to protect against high voltages and maintain high insulation resistance. The thin platinum layer provides high resistivity and fast response to temperature changes. Thin-film RTD elements may also be incorporated into protective housings or other types of assemblies for use in harsh conditions. Features and Benefits: Thin-film construction; Highly stable and accurate output; Linear output over a wide operating range; Fast thermal response time of 0.1 seconds; Vibration and shock resistance; Temperature measurement range: -50 to +500°C; 10 mm lead wires. Applications: Thin-film PRT temperature sensors are suitable for protected surface and immersion applications. Its low-profile design allows it to measure the temperature of flat surfaces with minimal intrusion. Typical Applications: Automotive, Chemical, Microelectronics, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Air, Gas, and Liquid Temperature Measurement, Food Processing, Laboratory. Frequently Asked Questions: How do PRT temperature sensors work? PRT temperature sensors operate by placing the sensor element (or process end) in the equipment or process requiring temperature measurement. The higher the temperature rises in a platinum resistor thermometer, the greater its resistance to electrical current. For every degree increase in temperature, the electrical resistance also changes by a set ratio. This ratio is called the temperature coefficient. For platinum, this ratio is 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C. For a Pt100 with a resistance of 100 Ω, the increase in resistance per degree Celsius is 0.385 Ω. Therefore, the total resistance measurement can be measured and converted to temperature. How to Measure Resistance: The resistance produced by a Pt100 or Pt1000 RTD can be measured by passing a current through one of the wires, generating a voltage. This voltage is measured using a suitable bridge or voltmeter and the resistance calculated using Ohm's law (R=V/I). Once the resistance is known, it can be converted to a temperature measurement using a calibration formula or Pt100/Pt1000 tables. A temperature measurement device or calibrator can also be connected to the sensor to automatically convert the measured resistance into a temperature measurement.
