The use of UD lenses suppresses chromatic aberration, achieving both the large bokeh characteristic of an F1.4 lens and smooth rendering from the focal peak. The appropriate placement of aspherical lenses achieves high image quality across the entire frame, surpassing that of the EF85mm F1.4L IS USM. It also allows for close-up shooting with a minimum focusing distance of 0.75m and a maximum magnification of 0.12x.

Furthermore, the lens is equipped with an iris ring, allowing manual aperture control during video recording.

Furthermore, when combined with the Dual Pixel Intelligent AF and CMOS AF II found on the EOS R1/R5 Mark II, it achieves high-speed, high-precision AF. The VCM is controlled by a high-performance microprocessor, matching it with the camera's AF algorithm to accommodate changing shooting styles, such as high-speed continuous shooting with the electronic shutter and regular use of servo AF with subject detection. Combined with the high-speed AF, the camera's AF system delivers even greater comfort with its fast, continuous capture, stable tracking, and consistent focus.

The optical design suppresses focus breathing during video shooting, allowing you to shoot video with extremely stable composition, even when paired with a camera that does not have an electronic focus breathing compensation function. With a camera that supports focus breathing compensation, turning focus breathing compensation on makes stability even more pronounced. When shooting video, the lens operates quietly, smoothly tracking subject movement and touch focus operations, allowing you to shoot high-quality video.
