Inheriting the optical system of the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM, which achieves lightweight and high image quality at a high level, this lens features an optimal magnifying optical system at the rear of the lens, achieving a long focal length. This compact, lightweight, and highly practical super telephoto lens expands the scope of photography for users, including celestial bodies, wildlife, aircraft, and sports. Utilizing fluorite and Super UD lenses, it achieves clear, sharp, high-quality image without color bleeding.
Additionally, it is possible to attach the separately sold "Extender RF1.4x" and "Extender RF2x" (both models released in 2020), which extend the focal length by 1.4x and 2x, respectively.

Ideal chromatic aberration correction, fluorite lens: The use of fluorite lenses achieves almost complete elimination of chromatic aberration in captured images, resulting in clear, sharp images and high image quality.
Super UD Lens: Optical performance comparable to that of fluorite. A low-refractive, low-dispersion optical material that effectively removes secondary spectrum, it also possesses anomalous dispersion characteristics similar to fluorite, making two UD lenses nearly equivalent to one fluorite lens. The Super UD Lens significantly improves optical performance, correcting chromatic aberration and making the lens body more compact.
ASC (Air Sphere Coating)
The lens employs ASC coating technology, which significantly reduces flare and ghosting, and is highly effective in preventing reflections of light incident at near-perpendicular angles.
Fluorine coating: This fluorine coating makes it easy to remove dirt from the lens surface. It is characterized by its ability to resist static electricity after dry wiping, making it less likely to attract dust and other particles, and its smooth surface is also resistant to scratches and water droplets.
