Overview: Nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen are indicators of water pollution and plant nutrition. They are nitrogen compounds derived from inorganic fertilizers and decaying plants and animals, and are used to evaluate the performance of wastewater treatment plants and to check the aquaculture environment for fish and shellfish. The units of measurement are equivalent to the mass concentration of nitrogen present in the form of nitrite ions and nitrate ions, and are expressed as (NO ₂ -N) for nitrite nitrogen and (NO ₂ -N) for nitrate nitrogen, respectively.
