ElectraSyn Electrode Starter Kit
The ElectraSyn Electrode Starter Pack includes the most common electrodes for exploring a variety of electrochemical reactions. Electrode selection is based on whether the desired reaction is oxidation or reduction. Additional electrodes to further optimize the reaction are available as accessories. Two strategies for using electrodes are presented below as examples:
Case 1 – Carbon-based electrode materials:
Carbon-based materials are very useful for the synthesis of C-C and C-N bonding reactions. The SK-50 Graphite electrode included in the starter pack is a low-cost carbon electrode that provides the basic properties of carbon-based materials. The RVC (Reticulated Vitreous Carbon) electrode is a carbon foam electrode with a larger surface area that helps increase electron efficiency. The glassy carbon electrode is a metal-free carbon electrode with a uniform surface area.
Completing the electrodes in the starter pack is an electrode made of boron-doped diamond (BDD), a metal-free carbon material with higher durability that is suitable for use under drastic reaction conditions. The boron-doped diamond electrode is available separately as an accessory (Ident. No.: 0040002856).
Case 2 – Platinum:
Platinum is useful for the formation of CC bonds. Platinum is used as a non-sacrificial anode and as a cathode that facilitates proton reduction. Platinum electrodes are not included in the Electrode starter pack and are only available separately as accessories.
IKA offers two types of platinum electrodes: Platinum Foil, Set of 2 (Ident. No.: 0040005015) is recommended for more drastic conditions; Platinum coated on ceramic (Ident. No.: 0040006753) is recommended for milder conditions.
