Underground utility locators detect energized and unenergized power lines, cables, and metallic pipes. These instruments help contractors accurately find and mark buried utilities and lines to prevent hazards, eliminate downtime and delays, and reduce excavation costs. They work by active or passive tracing: an active system includes a transmitter that connects to or is positioned near above-ground equipment with lines running underground. The transmitter sends a signal through the system and pairs with a receiver that produces an audible and visual warning when held above the underground utility. A passive system does not use a transmitter to induce a signal but is less accurate than an active system. Underground utility locators also find buried telephone lines and cables as well as water, gas, and sewage lines.
