PRT temperature sensors operate by placing the sensor element (or process end) in the equipment or process requiring temperature measurement. The higher the platinum resistance thermometer, the greater its resistance to electrical current. For every degree increase in temperature, the electrical resistance also changes by a set ratio. This ratio is called the temperature coefficient. For platinum, this ratio is 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C, meaning that a Pt100 with a resistance of 100 Ω will have a resistance increase of 0.385 Ω per degree Celsius of temperature.
