RS Pro General-Purpose 4-Wire Pt100 PRT Probe with Teflon-Insulated Leads. This high-quality, reliable Pt100 PRT (Platinum Resistance Thermometer) or RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensing probe from RS Pro. This RTD probe features a robust sensing element housed in a rigid 316 stainless steel sheath. It features four twisted leads with durable, flexible Teflon insulation. This platinum resistance thermometer provides accurate and reliable temperature measurement in a variety of applications. What is an RTD? An RTD is a type of temperature sensor based on the correlation between metal and temperature. As metals heat up, they resist electrical current more. This resistance can be measured and converted into a temperature reading. The "Pt" in "Pt100 RTD" stands for platinum (platinum wire or film), and the "100" means the temperature sensor has a resistance of 100 Ω at 0°C. Platinum is the most reliable metal because its resistance changes linearly over a wide temperature range. What is a Pt100 probe? A Pt100 probe is the most rugged form of RTD. The Pt100 temperature sensor element is mounted inside a metal sheath or probe. This protects the sensor element from damage by the surrounding environment when it is inserted into the process being measured. The other end of the probe is terminated with an insulated 4-wire tail that connects to the temperature measurement device. Features and Benefits: High-stability sensing element, high-accuracy output. IEC 60751 Class B accuracy tolerance. Temperature measurement range: -50 to +200°C. Four lead wires for accurate readings. Lead connection to 2-, 3-, or 4-wire Pt100 instruments. Rigid 316 corrosion-resistant stainless steel sheath protects the sensing element. Flexible Teflon insulation provides thermal and electrical insulation, impact strength, and protection against moisture, corrosion, and abrasive chemicals, even at extreme temperatures. Applications: These ruggedly designed PRT sensor probes are ideal for a variety of general-purpose industrial applications, including: Air conditioning and refrigeration Chemical industry Plastics processing Stoves and grills Air, gas, and liquid temperature measurement Exhaust gas temperature measurement Food processing Laboratory. Frequently Asked Questions: How do PRT temperature sensors work? PRT temperature sensors operate by placing the sensor element (or process end) in the equipment or process requiring temperature measurement. The higher the platinum resistance thermometer, the greater its resistance to electrical current. For every degree increase in temperature, electrical resistance also changes by a set ratio. This ratio is called the temperature coefficient. For platinum, this ratio is 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C, meaning that a Pt100 with a resistance of 100 Ω will have a resistance increase of 0.385 Ω per degree Celsius. Therefore, the total resistance measurement can be measured and converted to temperature. How Resistance is Measured. The resistance developed by the temperature sensor is measured by passing a current through one of the wires, generating a voltage. This voltage is measured using an appropriate bridge or voltmeter, and the resistance is calculated using Ohm's Law (R=V/I). Once the resistance is known, it can be converted to a temperature measurement using a calibration equation or Pt100 table. A temperature measurement device or calibrator can also be connected to the probe leads to automatically convert the measured resistance to a temperature measurement.
